Toxic Sofas

Thousands of people are already suing High Street stores over toxic sofas which have been blamed for provoking dramatic allergic reactions and skin burns.

The problem with the sofas, initially reported on BBC Watchdog, is believed to have been caused by a potent fungicide Di-methyl Fumarate (DMF). DMF is stored in sachets inside the sofas to stop them going mouldy but has been blamed for a series of violent reactions in babies, adults and even household pets.

In many cases the pain is like the worst sort of sunburn or scalding from acid or boiling water. It can last for months or years if people don’t realise the cause. Medical treatments don’t work until the toxic sofa is removed from their lives.

The sofas, made by Chinese firm Linkwise and sold through many retailers including Argos, Land of Leather and Walmsleys,  were withdrawn when problems were first identified last year, but many people who bought them are still suffering. The belief is that over 50,000 households could have been sold affected furniture. Not everyone will react to the toxic sofas and there is a fear that many new incidences may occur when the sofas hit the second hand market.

Grindeys, alongside a few other law firms, is part of the Group Litigation Order that has been approved by the court. A Group Litigation Order means that when there are multiple parties or claimants to the same cause of action all cases can be dealt with collectively although compensation amounts will be decided individually depending on the circumstances and severity of the reaction.

If you believe you have been affected by one of these sofas please contact Susannah Campbell, a partner with the firm, who is already dealing with several similar claims.
